Work Package 1

The making of the European Arctic – Northern resource governance in comparative contexts

This work package considers how industry, science, and politics have shaped the European Arctic from the 19th century until the present. Particular focus is put on problematizing the two issues:

  1. How were governance structures created to define, control, and utilize the resources of the European Arctic?
  2. To what extent can we speak of the European Arctic as following a separate or even unique trajectory from other regions of the circumpolar north?

The aim is to provide a foundation for further studies in the other work packages by outlining the evolution of resource governance within the study area of the programme.
